A former fire station in the riverfront village of Point Pleasant has been transformed into a brewery and eatery.

Boo’s Brewing Company and Firehouse Grill recently opened at 4961 River Road, the former home of the Point Pleasant Fire Company, earlier this month. The location is about 15 minutes from New Hope Borough and a short drive from the Solebury Township border.

The brewery is serving up craft beer and drinks, with an operational kitchen on the way.

Local resident Karen Giordano partnered with builder and designer Glen Stephan to purchase and renovate the building that was previously owned by the Kinsmans family, who are known for their local garden center.

Chef Michael Butera will soon be preparing food for customers, Giordano said.

The brewery features a rotation of craft beers on tap, wines from the Keystone State, and cocktails and mocktails.

As Texas native, Giordano said there will soon be a menu of smoked meats, sandwiches, appetizers, and salads at a price that won’t break the bank.

Giordano’s foray into brewing began during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“When the world shut down in 2020 due to COVID, all of my friends were making sourdough bread. Bread just makes me fat,” she joked. “But I never minded drinking beer, so I thought it’s kind of the same thing. I just started messing around making some beer. The first batch was awful, the second batch was all right, and so then I just started getting into making beer.”

After her initial plans to open a bar in her home were denied by the township, Giordano pursued the fire station property.

“This place was available and they told me to just make an offer,” she said.

Giordano and Stephan, who recently worked on the New Hope Arts Center, spent several months renovating the space with the goal of creating an inviting and relaxing atmosphere while preserving the building’s history. They incorporated firefighting memorabilia into the space.

“We wanted to preserve as much of its character as we could,” she said.

The former fire engine bays now serve as a bar and dining area, and the fire company’s former hall upstairs is available for large events.

The brewery’s name, Boo’s, is a tribute to Giordano’s late Newfoundland and Saint Bernard mixed-breed dog.

“People used to get a kick out of watching me walk her because she was a very big girl, and I’m not so big,” Giordano said.

Giordano said her goal is for the brewery to become a community gathering space.

“With with Point Pleasant being a small community, you kind of know a lot of your neighbors, but the reaction since we’ve opened has been insane,” she said.
