A bridge spanning the Delaware Canal in New Hope Borough and the towpath beneath it have been closed due to safety concerns, the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources announced this week.
The bridge, which connects River Road to The Waterworks Condominiums, has fallen into a state of disrepair, which had led to a full closure.
Officials warned that destabilized debris could fall from the structure.
“FOR PUBLIC SAFETY, under no circumstances shall pedestrians utilize the towpath underneath the bridge or the bridge itself,” the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources notice stated. “Please turn around at the closure and DO NOT attempt to get by it.”
The Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources did not provide a timeline for repairs or reopening.
The Bucks County Water and Sewer Authority pressed the state to fix the bridge in 2023.
The closure affects both pedestrian and bicycle traffic along the popular towpath that is part of Delaware Canal State Park.
