A small plane crashed in an empty lot near the Doylestown Airport Monday morning after experiencing mechanical problems shortly after takeoff, Buckingham Township police said.

The pilot, who was the sole occupant of the aircraft, escaped injury, authorities reported.

The crash occurred just after 11 a.m. in the 3800 block of Old Easton Road, which is not far from the airport, according to police.

Police said the plane was found overturned in a gravel parking lot.

The pilot was able to exit the aircraft on his own, according to reports.

“Preliminary findings suggest the plane encountered mechanical problems shortly after takeoff and was returning to the airport when the crash occurred. The pilot reported that he attempted to make an emergency landing,” according to a police statement.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is investigating the incident.

Police, Central Bucks Emergency Medical Services, and Doylestown Fire Company responded to the call.

The crash follows one that happened last fall at the airport.
