Cavallo Park in the City of Lambertville has been closed indefinitely.

City officials announced Friday that soil testing revealed elevated levels of lead and benzo(a)pyrene at the park on Mt. Hope Street.

The contamination was discovered during recent soil testing required for Green Acres grant funding, according to the notice from the city.

The contaminated soil was brought to the park in 2017 as part of an engineering cap installation, which was required by the Green Acres grant, city officials said.

The city will be undertaking an environmental remediation project to remove the contaminated soil.

Lead exposure can cause developmental issues, heart problems and kidney damage. Benzo(a)pyrene is a known carcinogen.

The city warned the fill material may be harmful if ingested.

Further testing will be conducted before the park reopens, officials said.
