The New Hope-Lambertville Toll-Supported Bridge is set to reopen to pedestrian traffic before nightfall Wednesday and to vehicles heading into Pennsylvania by midday Thursday, the Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission announced.
The shutdown is initially slated to last until next Monday and is wrapping up four to five days ahead of schedule.
The bridge, a link between Bucks County and Hunterdon County, has been closed since January 13 for urgent structural repairs.
Crews have been working on the 120-year-old steel-truss bridge to replace a critically deteriorated structural component — a 4-inch-diameter, 18-inch-long cylindrical steel pin. The pin, which connected 13 structural steel members, was essential to the integrity of the bridge’s second span from the Pennsylvania side, commission officials said.
Despite challenges posed by recent cold weather, the return of full two-way traffic expected to resume by mid-February, the commission said.
The piece that was replaced was located on the span that connects Bucks County and Hunterdon County as it was undergoing a renovation and upgrade project that began a year ago.
