The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm watch for central and upper Bucks County and Hunterdon County as forecasters are predicting snow and frigid temperatures starting Sunday.

According to the weather service’s regional office, the storm is expected to roll in Sunday morning, bringing with it snowfall that could accumulate between 3 to 8 inches and fall at rates of up to 1 inch per hour.

The heavy snowfall is expected to continue through Sunday night.

The snow could lead to challenging travel conditions across the area.

Ahead of the storm, Solebury Township issued a snow emergency declaration from 6 a.m. Sunday to Monday at 6 p.m.

“During this time, any vehicles left parked or found disabled on Township roads will be ticketed and towed at the owner’s expense,” Solebury Township police said, adding residents can stay home and watch the Philadelphia Eagles game.

Following the storm, an Arctic blast is set to hit the region and plunge temperatures to their lowest from Monday night through Thursday morning.

According to the forecast, daytime highs will hover in the teens, with nighttime lows dipping into single digits and below zero. Wind chills are forecast to fall below zero degrees during the night and only slightly recover into single digits during the day.

The extreme cold poses increased risks of hypothermia and frostbite, and the forecasters warn of potential impacts to infrastructure, including frozen pipes and a spike in heating energy demands.

In response to the forecast, PennDOT issued travel advisories urging drivers to prepare their vehicles for winter conditions.

Recommendations from state transportation officials include maintaining a full tank of gas, ensuring tires are properly inflated, and having operational windshield wipers. PennDOT also advises keeping food, water, warm clothing, and necessary items like medications, as well as baby and pet supplies, in vehicles.

Additional winter travel tips include carrying charging cords, spare battery packs, a first aid kit, a small shovel, and a flashlight.

The Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency (PEMA) is coordinating with state and local agencies to monitor the situation and will provide additional resources to assist local governments as needed, according to a statement.
