New Hope Celebrates will propose and aims to fund the addition of the Progress Pride Flag onto West Mechanic Street near the intersection with Main Street.

The nonprofit is calling it an “asphalt art landmark” that will make a “bold statement of inclusivity and community pride.”

New Hope Celebrates plans to propose the artwork at the Jan. 21 New Hope Borough Council meeting.

The group said it plans to fund and maintain the rainbow-colored display if it is approved for the roadway.

“This installation will become a landmark that embodies the spirit of acceptance and inclusivity at the heart of New Hope, reflecting the values that make our community so special and promoting New Hope as a place where everyone is respected and welcome”, said Melissa Patterson, president of New Hope Celebrates.

A petition has been launched to support the idea.

As of Wednesday morning, the petition had gained 315 signatures and was seeking 1,000.

Michael Sklar, the president of the Greater New Hope Chamber of Commerce and a local business owner, put his support behind the idea.

“This landmark has the potential to become a major attraction, drawing visitors and boosting foot traffic for our local businesses,” he said. “It’s a project that not only celebrates diversity but also contributes to the economic vitality of New Hope, reinforcing our town as a welcoming destination for all.”

New Hope Celebrates said the goal is to highlight the borough’s values of inclusivity and unity; attract visitors; create a place for dialogue on equality, representation, and community values; and create a lasting art instillation.

In 2023, Doylestown Borough painted a Pride-inspired crosswalk at Printer’s Alley along East State Street in Doylestown Borough.
