Finkle’s, the hardware store that has been serving the City of Lambertville and surrounding  communities for 107 years, will be closing its doors on Tuesday, Dec. 31.

The store on Coryell Street has long been known as “the world’s most unusual supply house,” a title it earned through its inventory and dedication to customer service.

Under the leadership of Rachel Finkle, who took over the business in the early 1990s after the passing of her father Abe, the shop has carried on a family legacy that began with her grandfather, Joseph Finkle.

A Russian immigrant, Joseph moved to Lambertville in 1900 and started the business as a scrap yard before transforming it into the hardware store generations have come to rely on.

Customers and employees alike describe Finkle’s as a place built on fairness and honesty.

Finkle’s carries everything needed to do home repairs and improvements. From nuts to bolts, to kitchen hardware, knobs, heating, electrical supplies, plumbing supplies, and much more, it has been a staple in the city.

Longtime employees have played a crucial role in maintaining the store’s reputation.

“Finkle’s is the best hardware store around, you name it and they had it or would find it. A family store like no other,” one customer wrote on social media.

While Finkle’s has stood the test of time, the rise of big-box stores and specialized distributors has made survival increasingly difficult for small, family-owned shops. These challenges, coupled with the sale of the property several years ago, have brought Finkle’s to a close, according to a NJ.com article.

Though the future of the property at 7 Coryell Street—once a coal yard before Joseph Finkle purchased it—has not yet been announced, it will find new life.

For now, customers are savoring their final visits and scooping up last-minute deals.

Check off that to-do list with a visit to Finkle’s before they close their doors and experience a piece of history in the Lambertville community.
