The Bucks County Playhouse’s production of “Anastasia: The Musical” is wowing audiences at the New Hope Borough theater.

The musical, a brainchild of the Tony Award-winning team behind “Ragtime,” tells the story of a young woman’s quest to uncover her mysterious past while being pursued by a relentless Soviet officer.

“Anastasia: The Musical” covers the twilight of the Russian Empire to the glitz of 1920s Paris.

The show started its run in late November and wraps up on Sunday, Jan. 5, 2025.

“Anastasia” features a book by four-time Tony winner Terrence McNally and music and lyrics by Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens. The playhouse’s production is choreographed by Al Blackstone and directed by Eric Rosen.

The lead role of Anya is portrayed by Lyda Jade Harlan, making her Bucks County Playhouse debut. She is supported by a cast, including Mason Reeves as the conman Dmitry, Erik Lochtefeld as ex-aristocrat Vlad, Roe Hartrampf as the Soviet officer Gleb, Kate Marilley as Countess Lily, and Christine Toy Johnson as the Dowager Empress.

“I love romantic musicals and I’ve been fascinated by the mystery of Anastasia since I was a child,” said Producing Director Alexander Fraser. “It’s thrilling to see how the creators of this Broadway musical have envisioned the story in a remarkable and fascinating way — one that has made the story timeless.”

A the opening night party in November, Christy Altomare, the original Anastasia on Broadway and a resident of Newtown, passed the baton to Harlan at the Oldestone Steakhouse on Main Street. Altomare passed the torch to the new cast and presented a bouquet of flowers to Harlan.

On Sunday, Ahrens, the Tony Award-winning lyricist who co-wrote the show, visited the cast after the matinee.

Tickets for “Anastasia” start at $39 and can be purchased through the Bucks County Playhouse box office by calling 215-862-2121 or visiting BucksCountyPlayhouse.org.
