The annual Christmas Day reenactment of George Washington’s historic crossing of the Delaware River will take place Wednesday at Washington Crossing Historic Park in Upper Makefield Township.

The reenactment, which draws spectators from around the region, runs from noon to 3 p.m., but the crossing is set to begin at 1 p.m. Event officials are advising attendees to arrive by 11:30 a.m. to secure good viewing spots along the riverbank.

There had been uncertainty about whether the replica Durham boats used for the crossing would be able to navigate the river due to lower water levels caused by the ongoing drought. However, organizers said this week that conditions appeared to be sufficient for the boats to go in the water.

The Christmas crossing reenactment, which is free to the public, recreates the daring 1776 military maneuver when then-General George Washington and his troops crossed the icy Delaware River on Christmas night — a pivotal moment in the American Revolutionary War.

The event typically attracts a large crowd to the park.
