Halloween turned dangerous in the City of Lambertville on Tuesday night when a 7-year-old girl sustained first- and second-degree burns after her costume caught fire from a candle during trick-or-treating, according to authorities.
The incident occurred around 8 p.m. on North Union Street as the child, who was accompanied by her parents, approached a home decorated with lit candles along the steps. The child’s costume ignited when it brushed against one of the candles, police said.
A quick-acting bystander, who was also trick-or-treating with their child, intervened to extinguish the flames using bare hands, police said.
The girl received immediate first aid from neighbors and the homeowner until emergency crews arrived, police said.
The Lambertville-New Hope Ambulance and Rescue Squad and the Lambertville Fire Department responded to the scene with police.
The injured child was transported to the trauma center at Capital Health Regional Medical Center in Trenton where she was evaluated and treated for her burns, police said.
The girl was later released and is expected to make a full recovery, police said.
The good Samaritan who helped extinguish the fire sustained minor burns to the hands but declined medical treatment at the scene.
Police said they are investigating the incident.
