The Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources announced Friday morning that it will cancel the traditional November whitewater release from Lake Nockamixon into Tohickon Creek due to low water levels.
The release is typically scheduled on the third weekend in March and the first weekend in November.
The release is a draw for whitewater enthusiasts seeking to navigate the challenging rapids that the increased flow of water provides. However, current conditions in Lake Nockamixon have fallen short of the needed water levels by a foot, officials said.
The low water level has been caused by dry conditions and a lack of rainfall, officials said.
According to the National Weather Service’s regional office, there has been no measurable rainfall in Allentown since October 3, in Philadelphia since September 28, and Trenton since September 28.
Although there is a slight chance of light rain next week, it is not expected to be enough to allow the planned water release, forecasts said.
The dry spell is expected to continue with the forecast showing pattern likely to not lead to significant precipitation in the coming weeks.
Bucks County has been listed this week as experiencing a moderate drought by the National Integrated Drought Information System.
