A portion of York Street was closed Wednesday evening in the City of Lambertville while Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff attended a fundraiser as protesters chanted outside.
Emhoff arrived at the private residence on York Street around 6 p.m. in a U.S. Secret Service motorcade that was escorted by New Jersey State Police and stayed for close to two hours.
The fundraiser was for the campaign of Emhoff’s wife, Vice President Kamala Harris, and came in the final weeks of the race between Harris and former President Donald Trump.
Across the street from the fundraiser, a group protested President Joe Biden’s and Harris’ response to the war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza following the Oct. 7, 2023, attack by the terrorist group Hamas.
The group held signs that read “Let Gaza Live – Permanent Ceasefire,” “$$ For Health Care, Not Bombs,” and “Prayers for Palestine.”
Alexis Berends, who once lived in the West Bank and knows many people in Palestine, said the group was calling for a U.S. arms embargo and a lasting ceasefire to the fighting, which has killed tens of thousands of Palestinians.
“There should also be a humanitarian corridor established,” Berends said.
When asked about Harris’s and Trump’s stances on Palestine, Berends said, “They’re both terrible.”
“I have no hope,” she added, noting a friend recently had seven family members killed in Palestine.
City police blocked the street where the fundraiser was held and reopened it after the Second Gentleman left.
Also on Wednesday, Harris held a rally a few miles away at Washington Crossing Historic Park in Upper Makefield Township. A Harris campaign official said the husband and wife were not expected to meet up due to timing.
