Hunterdon County officials have initiated the development of a comprehensive Local Safety Action Plan (LSAP) that is looking to improve transportation safety.
Hunterdon County Commissioner Zach Rich, who serves as the liaison to the Planning and Land Use Department, announced the plan, which seeks to improve safety for drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians while reducing fatal and serious injury crashes on both county and municipal roadways.
Funded by a grant from the North Jersey Transportation Planning Authority, the LSAP is part of a regional effort to advance transportation safety across northern and central New Jersey.
The plan is also positioned to leverage federal funding opportunities, including those available through the $5 billion Safe Streets and Roads for All Program.
Hunterdon County’s crash data reveals a need for targeted safety improvements.
While 43 percent of all fatal and serious injury crashes in the county occur on local roads, this figure is notably lower than the state average of 60 percent. Despite this, local fatalities peak in September, and serious injuries are most frequent in July, with lane departure being a leading cause, according to the county government.
“The LSAP process relies on input from Hunterdon County residents and technical experts to match local needs with solutions that will reduce and eliminate serious injuries and fatalities,” Rich said.
The commissioner added, “We are dedicated to improving the safety and quality of life for our residents. The LSAP plan will incorporate community feedback, data analysis, and the best practices in transportation safety to implement effective solutions.”
Residents of Hunterdon County are able to participate in the planning process through various channels, including an online survey and upcoming in-person events.
