An Upper Bucks County township official is working to convince PennDOT to prohibit to ban tractor-trailers from River Road.
In September, Tinicum Township Supervisor John Cole, a former truck driver, spoke to the Solebury Township Board of Supervisors in an effort to convince them to join his quest to prohibit trucks on the picturesque road that spans lower, central, and upper Bucks County.
Cole outlined the problems faced by Tinicum Township, including crashes involving tractor-trailers.
The discussed ban would not stop tractor-trailers that are making local deliveries.
According to Cole, many of these trucks are directed onto River Road by GPS systems or are attempting to avoid tolls while traveling from New Jersey into Pennsylvania. The number of large trucks has grown in recent years, especially since the toll was enacted on the Scuddlers Falls Bridge in Lower Bucks County.
Solebury Township supervisors expressed interest in the proposal but indicated they wanted to seek further details.
Supervisor Christy Cheever raised additional concerns about the danger the large vehicles pose to bicyclists.
Solebury Township Township Solicitor Mark Freed suggested that a study be conducted by PennDOT to assess the impact of truck traffic and explore possible solutions.
“What does this mean for the other roadways in the township? That is something you will not know without a study being performed,” said township Traffic Engineer Mark Roth.
A meeting between PennDOT and Tinicum Township officials is expected to address the issue.
Tinicum Township residents have grown increasingly frustrated with the disruptions caused by tractor-trailers, according to a recent report by the Bucks County Herald.
