Repair work on the historic Lumberville-Raven Rock Toll-Supported Pedestrian Bridge is currently underway.
Officials from the Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission said the crews have been working to address mortar and loose stone issues on the structure’s in-river piers.
The pedestrian bridge is a connector between Solebury Township in Bucks County and Delaware Township in Hunterdon County.
The bridge remains open as crews perform their work beneath the walkway.
The need to repair the bridge piers’ stonework is the result of recent inspections, commission officials said.
The Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission stated that the repairs, which started in July and are expected to continue, are important for maintaining the bridge’s support structures.
Workers were spotted accessing the piers via a small boat to carry out the necessary masonry work.
Following the completion of the project, attention will shift downstream to the Calhoun Street Toll-Supported Bridge, which connects Trenton and Morrisville Borough. Additional repair work is also scheduled for the Riverton-Belvidere Toll-Supported Bridge between Lower Mt. Bethel and Belvidere, as well as the Washington Crossing Toll-Supported Bridge between Upper Makefield Township and Hopewell Township.
Those bridge will also remain open during their repairs.
The commission highlighted that the extensive 30-week repair program covering all four bridges will extend into 2025.
Except for one reinforced-concrete pier at Washington Crossing, the piers of these bridges date back to the mid-19th century, with Washington Crossing’s piers built in 1833 and 1834, Riverton-Belvidere’s in 1835 and 1836, Lumberville-Raven Rock’s in 1853 and 1855, and Calhoun Street’s in 1859 and 1860.
