Police in Solebury Township are investigating multiple incidents of mail theft from residential mailboxes, they reported on Friday.
Authorities have identified that thieves are specifically targeting mail containing checks, which can be “washed” and altered to fraudulently withdraw funds from victims’ accounts.
At least one such incident has been confirmed where altered checks were used to steal funds, police said.
Officers warned that thieves are likely targeting mailboxes with raised flags, signaling outgoing mail.
“We are aware from surrounding law enforcement agencies that thieves are targeting outgoing mail as indicated by a raised flag on the mailbox,” police said.
The thefts are not limited to outgoing mail and reports have also surfaced of stolen checks from incoming mail and U.S. Postal Service curbside drop boxes.
Police urged all residents to monitor their financial statements for any suspicious activity and to contact their banks to cancel any potentially stolen checks.
Police released the following tips for residents:
- Deposit outgoing mail at indoor post office boxes
- Retrieve incoming mail from the mailbox as soon as possible after delivery If you are away or delayed, ask a trusted person or neighbor to retrieve your mail
- Anticipate delivery of checks or credit cards, and contact the senders if you believe the delivery is past due
- Immediately report to police any suspicious activity, missing items, or unusual activity on financial statements
Residents who suspect they may be victims of mail theft should contact Solebury Township police at 215-328-8511.
