The owner of the Newtown Athletic Club is leading Pennsylvania’s delegation to the Republican National Convention this week.
Jim Worthington, a resident of Upper Makefield Township and prominent supporter of former President Donald Trump, read the statewide delegation’s nomination on Monday in Milwaukee.
Worthington, who is close with Trump and Congressman Brian Fitzpatrick, had played a role in organizing events and fundraising for Republicans. Earlier this spring, Worthington hosted a high-priced fundraiser for Trump in Newtown Township.
In a statement, Worthington pointed to the importance of his role leading the delegation in communicating with delegates to ensure they understand their responsibilities and have opportunities to support the Republican Party.
“It is my belief that as delegates we are obligated to be leaders in our communities for effective activism and voter engagement. There is nothing more important than the involvement and education of the individual voter as they navigate their privilege and right as a citizen to vote.” said Worthington.
On Monday, Trump formally received the party’s 2024 nomination for president during a roll call vote. Amid the roll call, Trump, who survived an assassination attempt on Saturday, announced Ohio U.S. Sen. J.D. Vance as his vice presidential running mate.
Trump is set to deliver a speech officially accepting the Republican presidential nomination on Thursday night to close out the convention.
Worthington’s political involvement goes back to 2016 when he hosted Trump at his Newtown Township sports facility and took part in a 2020 Trump campaign stop in Upper Makefield Township.
The businessman has also hosted fundraisers for Fitzpatrick, featuring GOP advisor and commentator Karl Rove and former U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.
Beyond politics, Worthington has expanded the Newtown Athletic Club into large facility and is involved in real estate development, has operated sober-living homes in Levittown, and led philanthropy efforts in area.
