Summer will be kicking off with a serious heat wave, according to forecasts from the National Weather Service.
Temperatures are expected to soar into the 90s, with highs potentially reaching up to 101 degrees later in the week.
“An increasingly hot air mass will overspread the region as we go through the week. The hottest temps will occur on Friday and Saturday. Several high temp records are likely to be broken this week,” the National Weather Service posted on social media.
The hot air is set to settle over the region starting Tuesday and will persist through Sunday.
The predicted heat wave coincides with the official start of summer on Thursday.
Forecasters have warned of “dangerously hot conditions with heat index values up to 106 possible.” The heat will be accompanied by high humidity levels, according to the forecast.
A Heat Advisory has been issued for Tuesday, and an Excessive Heat Watch is in effect for the rest of the week.
The heat wave is part of a system that will bring temperatures in the 90s to more than 80 percent of the lower 48 states, according to CNN.
Residents are advised by experts to take necessary precautions to stay safe during the heat wave, including staying hydrated, avoiding strenuous outdoor activities during peak heat hours, and checking on vulnerable populations such as the elderly and young children.
