A New Hope Borough man is facing charges after allegedly attacking a woman and threatening her family.
On the evening of Sunday, March 10, New Hope Borough police were dispatched to an apartment in the 100 block of South Main Street for a report of a domestic assault in progress. A nearby resident reported hearing yelling, according to court papers.
While at the apartment building, officers encountered a woman who reported being assaulted by Yovani Fuentes-Martinez, 33, police said.
Officers found the apartment in disarray with items scattered around and a pot of food thrown against a wall, police said.
The victim told officers that Fuentes-Martinez had threatened her with a knife, physically assaulted her, and made threats against her daughters, who reside in Mexico, police said.
According to the woman, Fuentes-Martinez used a kitchen knife and a black metal object, believed to be a tire iron, during the assault, police said.
The woman suffered bruises around her throat, thighs, and arms. She also suffered significant swelling under her hair from being struck in the head, police said.
An officer documented the injuries with photographs and confiscated both the knife and tire iron from the apartment, police said.
According to police, Fuentes-Martinez denied any physical altercation. He claimed he was asleep with music playing when the alleged victim took his cellphone.
Police said there were questions about Fuentes-Martinez’s first name and his exact age after reviewing identification cards.
Fuentes-Martinez was charged with aggravated assault, possession of an instrument of crime with intent, terroristic threats, simple assault, and harassment. He was preliminarily arraigned by on-call District Judge Brian Marriott and released after posting 10 percent of $25,000 bail.
