The new Dollar General store along Route 179 has opened after weeks of appearing completed but not open.
A NewHopeFreePress.com reader reported the store opened within the past week.
The store on Route 179 near Music Mountain, which sits near the border for the City of Lambertville, was stocked and had staff working on Monday.
West Amwell Township officials gave the green light to the project in 2021.
When presenting their plans, Dollar General representatives cited the area’s traffic, median income, the number of homes nearby, and the absence of competition as key factors for building the location.
At the time, a company representative told West Amwell Township officials the average customer is in the store for 10 minutes or less and spends about $10 per trip.
However, Dollar General’s arrival has not been without controversy.
During the 2021 planning board meeting where approval was granted, residents voiced concerns about potential issues such as increased trash, traffic congestion, delivery truck noise, and potential devaluation of local properties.
Founded in 1939 in Kentucky, Dollar General has grown its footprint to more than 18,700 stores across the U.S. and Mexico, boasting revenues of $27 billion as of March.
The retailer has been on the receiving end of criticism for its low-wage jobs and pricing irregularities.
