The Hunterdon County Prosecutor’s Office, in collaboration with the Hunterdon County Sheriff’s Office, local police departments, New Jersey State Police, and the Safe Communities Coalition, collected 1,041 pounds of prescription drugs on National Take Back Day last month.
Hunterdon County Prosecutor Renée Robeson and Sheriff Frederick Brown announced the results this week of the initiative, which was sponsored by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).
The event aims to provide a safe, convenient, and responsible means of disposing of prescription drugs while educating the public about the potential for drug abuse.
The April 22 National Drug Take Back Day gave residents a chance to stop by designated collection sites at police departments and public buildings to dispose of their unused and expired medications safely.
According to the DEA, most abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from home medicine cabinets. The usual methods of disposing of unused medicines, such as flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash, both pose potential safety and health hazards.
For those who missed the event, there are still permanent prescription pill drop-off boxes located throughout Hunterdon County.
