The alert came across the emergency scanner at 8:37 p.m. Wednesday night: “Marine rescue 46 at Lambertville boat launch.”

New Hope Eagle Volunteer Fire Company was already in touch with Hunterdon County rescue units over a report of something unusual floating in the Delaware River south of the Route 202 bridge.

By 9 p.m., fire volunteers were stationed near and on the New Hope-Lambertville free bridge, urgently checking the waters below for a body or object. Volunteers confirmed they had heard someone may be “down” in the river.

Emergency vehicles soon moved farther north near the Route 202 bridge, where a rescue helicopter above had trained its search beam on the Pennsylvania bank of the river.

By 10 p.m. the skies and river were silent once more.

The object in question was “Possibly just a plastic bag that was blown off of the bridge,” said a New Hope Eagle spokesperson. “Crews [were] checking just to be sure.”
