There were no major surprises at Tuesday night’s meeting of New Hope Borough Council, and maybe that’s no surprise.
Among meetings known to be at once stultifying and anxiety-provoking, with an ever-present air of predetermination, Tuesday’s gathering was particularly tedious and uneventful.
One bright spot was the brief but heartfelt farewell by Borough Council to retiring New Hope Police Corporal Frank DeLuca.
DeLuca has been a popular fixture on the New Hope law enforcement and political scene for more than three decades, and council members and audience alike took their turn hugging and clapping for the clearly moved corporal.
Never the retiring type, Deluca is running for a six-year term as Constable in November on the Democratic ticket.
Also during the meeting, Borough Council President Claire Shaw announced that repair work on Bucks County Bridge 36, also known as the Stockton Avenue Bridge, may begin in a month or two, and take one month to complete.
Later, a representative from the Greater Lambertville-New Hope Chamber of Commerce acknowledged that their earlier public announcement of a definitive fireworks schedule had been “a bit premature,” and requested council’s acquiescence to an initial launch date of July 10. Representatives from New Hope’s fire and police departments offered to work toward accommodating the event, and were told by Lambertville representatives that their members’ additional time and effort would be offset.
One of those close to the situation said Wednesday that the July 10 launch duration had been cut down “to about 10 minutes.” Borough Council, police, firefighters and Lambertville Chamber representatives will apparently meet after the July 10 launch to discuss any issues that may have arisen during the initial show, and emergency services plans for the event are quickly being developed.
