Hunterdon County Prosecutor Anthony P. Kearns, III, Chief of Detectives John J. Kuczynski, and Delaware Township Police Chief Chris Cane announced Monday that fire investigators were looking into the fire that largely destroyed he Sergeantsville Inn. The blaze at the 300-year-old landmark was reported at approximately 1:50 a.m. Monday, say officials.
“The Hunterdon County Prosecutor’s Office Arson Investigation Unit, the New Jersey State Fire Marshal K-9 Unit, and the Hunterdon County Arson Task Force began investigating the fire early Monday morning.” said Kearns. “The structure sustained heavy damage. The preliminary results of the investigation indicate that the fire was not suspicious; however the cause of the fire remains officially undetermined at this time. The investigation is ongoing.”
Added Kearns, “I commend the efforts of the volunteer firefighters that fought this dangerous fire. We are very fortunate to have such a dedicated group of volunteers willing to put themselves in harms way to assist others.”
The Hunterdon County Arson Task Force is comprised of specially trained police officers, volunteer firefighters, as well as HCPO Detectives that work in conjunction with the State Police Arson/Bomb Squad and the New Jersey State Fire Marshal K-9 Unit to investigate major fires in the county.
