Artist Kate Graves takes a moment to smile as ‘Sturgeon’ is installed.

A nine-foot bronze sculpture depicting a stylized sturgeon was installed today at Ferry Street Park in New Hope as part of the PNC Arts Alive Outdoor Sculpture Project administered by New Hope Arts.

Artist Kate Graves was on hand to oversee the positioning of her creation, which is based on a realistic, albeit oversized, interpretation of the aquatic beast adorned with castings of mollusks and sturgeon parts.

“It’s a reminder that it is an endangered species that could be lost forever,” explained Graves.

Harry Gordon of Lambertville delivered and placed the artwork, and New Hope Arts Executive Director Carol Cruickshanks was on hand to help, as well.

“This is our first installation of the spring, and we’re working on at least four more,” said Cruickshanks. “A dedication ceremony is being planned for Memorial Day weekend.”

New Hope Arts is expanding its celebrated outdoor sculpture exhibition as a recipient of a sponsorship grant from PNC Arts Alive.

PNC Arts Alive is a multi-year, multi-million dollar initiative of the PNC Foundation, which receives its principal funding from The PNC Financial Services Group, Inc. The goal of PNC Arts Alive is to help area residents gain access to the arts and to help arts organization expand and engage audiences.

This one's a keeper.
